Circular No 499

Newsletter for alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.

Caracas, 28 May 2011 No.499
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

I am a bit slow these days as I have had some health issues in the family, but all is over and all is well.

Something from the past:
http://www.4shared.com/audio/Z9128fIy/Mighty_Sparrow-Jean__Dinah-The.html
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Old circular.No.19
This Circular was published but it did not contain hard information.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Here are all the emails received from you Geoffrey Golding.
Geoffrey,
Maybe you can check them out and add something new.
How about information on the teacher that you liked best??
Who were your friends, that is, friends and not members of a faction, jajajaja.
We Venezuelans had our group and then the Hungarian subgroup.
But looking back, this did not make friends real, true?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Golding, Geoffrey - I left Mount in 1960 due to an illness and never returned.
I went to England to finish school in 1963 and graduated as a civil engineer in 1968.
Worked in England for a couple of years and went back to work in Trinidad for a year. Went back to England where I worked for a government organization.
Got married in 1972 to an old flame from Trinidad (Heather Dobias) and emigrated to Toronto, Canada in December 1973 to get away from the high taxes and damp conditions in England.
Canada is much colder but no where as damp!!!
I joined Texaco Canada in mid 1974.
Worked in Toronto for 10 years and was then transferred to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
During this period we were blessed with two daughter, Nicole (22 now) and Dana19.
Both are in University and draining my bank account!!
In 1988 Texaco transferred me to their Ontario Nanticoke refinery (close to Lake Erie).
Texaco was taken over by Imperial Oil (ESSO) in 1989 and I am still with them.
I am the Manager of the Environment, Health, Safety and Loss Control Department (very challenging having to deal with ever changing regulations and government folks).
I am two years away from retirement (60) and it can't come quick enough.
I have always dreamt of retiring "down the islands".
I live in Brantford, Ontario which is an hours drive West of Toronto.
I am planning to visit Trinidad within a couple of years and take the girls.
The last time I was there was in 1983 for Carnival.
That's it for now.
If any of you are near to me please give me a call or look me up.
Here is my address:
G. P. Golding, 49 Olivetree Road, Brantford, Ontario, Canada N3R 7X1. Phone 519 753-9978 .
I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, Ladislao
How are you keeping?
Hopefully, one of these days we can meet and renew our friendship from 50+ years ago!!
If you ever come up to the Toronto area let me know and we could meet.
I see Nigel Boos quite often.
It is very unlikely I will be visiting Trinidad again.
My brother, Jon, as you probably know, returned to England and has his condo up for sale in Trinidad.
With respect to the 1960 class photo I am # 19.
Best Wishes and keep up the good work
Geoff

Ladislao,
It has been a long time since I last contacted you but I religiously read your weekly news bulletins.
Keep up the good work!!!!
I have never sent you a photo so I am now sending one of my wife and I on my 30th year service award with Imperial Oil (ESSO) a month ago.
Do you recognize me?
We have all changed so much over the years but it is amazing how we can remember the faces from some 50 years ago.
Please send me Matias e-mail. I would like to surprise him!!
Best wishes and thanks,
Geoff.

Dear Ladislao,
I am Kenneth Ian Austin .
I was a student at the Abbey School from 1946 to 1952.
Yesterday I was trying to connect with PAXABBEY to gather news of any recent happenings,
But was unable to connect because the server is offline or some other problem.
However, fortunately the website for the Abbey School old boys circulars came up.
I spent the next many hours reading previous editions and looking at photos on Gioanetti site.
Years ago I used to receive newsletters regarding old Mount boys which I believe were compiled by Arthur Knaggs.
However I have not received any in many years and conclude that you have taken over that task, using modern technology.
Needless to say I was delighted to have hit on the site inadvertantly.
I notice from the circulars that some of my contemporaries such as Leary and Richard Oconnor are still around albeit in Australia.
I left Trinidad in January1954 and went with Trevor Soodeen to New York University.
Trevor received his degree in Commerce and now resides in Canada,
Unfortunately/I do not have an e-mail address for him.
I transferred to Howard University in Washington, DC in 1956 where I got my BS in Chemistry in1957 and MD in 1961.
After specialising in Internal Medicine/Rheumatology, I joined the faculty of my alma mater in 1966 and taught until my retirement in 2002.
I now practise 2 half-days a week in order to keep my hand in it and my brain active.
I married a Washingtonian in 1962 and we have 3 children:
Janine, an ophthalmologist at the National Institutes of health,
Sabrina, a lawyer
Sean who manages a tennis club.

Some of my contemporaries at Mount were
Arthur Knaggs,
Peter Gaffney,
David and John Farfan,
Ray Dacambra,
Hugh and Christopher Henderson,
Anthony Lucky,
David and Delano Dacastro,
Phillip Nassief from Antigua,
Vernon Lee Kit,
Bernard And Osmond Gomes from Guyana.,
Christen Krogh and
Johnny Nieto from Venezuela.
My brother, Trevor and I started at Mount in 1946 and Trevor replaced Nieto as the smallest boy earning the nickname, Mousey.
Trevor died in Trinidad in 1995, having received the last rites from the original abbot, Father Adelbert, who also ministered to my mother before her death in 1999.

My sister still lives in Trinidad and I try to visit her occasionally and when I am there I always visit the Mount.
I hope to be visiting in 2008.
Please add my name to the list to receive the circulars at
kentrini@AOL.com and may you and your family have a happy holiday season.
Maybe we will meet at a reunion of old boys one day.
Thanks for your efforts and keep up the good work.

Caracas, 16 of March 2002. Circular No.18
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

Last 10th of March was the birthday of my daughter Victoria “Viki”, the reason for the slowing down of the last circular.
Also we were lucky to have Bertrand Piccard with us here in Caracas. I shall send you a photograph taken at Plaza Altamira where he did an interview for local TV with interviews and propaganda for the Swiss Embassy.

I am sending out a call to those who have not shown signs of having received any of these circulars.
The practical reason is simple; I have difficulties in sending the circular to some addresses as these are reported to have errors or are undeliverable by the servers. Once they are returned they clutter my email box, instead of cluttering the email box of the recipient!!!. When my email box gets full, the system gets blocked and I loose track of further information. Help!!!
I have copies of my past circulars for those that do not have email these I can send it by FAX or snail mail. Check your files and tell me if you have some that have not arrived.

Another event that happened at the Mount, by Don Mitchell

Hi Ladislao,

I do remember the play. It was "A Man for All Seasons" written by the British playwright Robert Bolt. I do not remember all the roles or details. The year must have been 1962 or 1963. I believe that I played the part of the Duke of Norfolk, some sort of a judge at the trial of Moore, but it has been a long time and, though years later I saw the movie, I cannot remember for certain. M. J. de Verteuil played Moore with gusto and conviction, and Robert Azar, I believe, played the cowardly Richard Rich. Michael, I believe, played his competitor as Chancellor, Cardinal Wolsey. I cannot recall who played Henry VIII or Roper, the son in law, or the other parts.

For me, the most memorable thing about the play was that two lovely young women, a Fanfan and a Myling, played Moore's wife and daughter. I do not recall the school ever before having allowed girls to act in a school play. The two ladies were so lovely, I recall, that each evening when practice finished, all the windows of the school were stuffed with young male faces peering out for a glimpse of them as they got into the cars that came to collect them. They came from a convent in St Augustine to practice for several evenings after school. It must have been a terrifying experience for the two of them, but they carried it off with style and panache. I knew then and for all time that women were superior beings to men.

Don
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Names left right for the first photo: (remember to go to the Blog page for this old photo)

Richard Clerk, Rafael Echeverria, J.Fernanadez, Miss Myling Achong, Michael J. de Verteuil, Miss A. Rostant, Peter Tang, Don Mitchell, Allan Apo, Micheal Azar. Squatting Robert Azar.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following was taken from Mount Inside April 1964.

DRAMATICS

Sometime in May the curtain will once again go up as the College presents “A Man For All Seasons”; under the direction of Brother Oswald. The play is a study of the feud which rose between Sir Thomas More and King the Eight of England.
The part of King Henry, a rather crude young man; is fittingly taken by Paul Zeven, who we remember has acted in the last few plays. The part of More is taken by M.J. de Verteuil and that of the “Common Man” by R. Azar who seems at home in this type character. The Duke of Norfolk is played by D. Mitchell; Cromwell by M. Azar; William Roper, More´s son in law, by P.Tang; Richard Rich by R. Clerk; Cardinal Wolsey by J. Fernandez; and Archbishop Crammer becomes an American in A.Apo. The part of the Spanish Ambassador is portrayed by R.Echeverria and his attendant by N. Smith.
St. Joseph Convent has again provided for the female character. Alice, More´s wife, is played by A. Rostant; the woman, by P. Warfe; and Meg, More´s daughter by M. Achong.

Names left right for the second photo

Robert Azar, Richard Clerk, Michael Azar, Don Mitchell, Allan Apo
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you can see there is a discrepancy on the names that I have and the recount in Mount Inside.
King Henry or Paul Zeven ,
N. Smith the embassador´s attendant
Miss P.Warfe the other woman.
I would like to correct the name list, who remembers.
Also it would be interesting to hear from the actors on this matter.
Anyone knows the where abouts of any of the actors??
Their email address or FAX???.

Dear Ladislao,
I should have sent this e-mail at the end of last year thanking you for all you have been doing and continue to do, and apologise for not doing so earlier.
I was in Hamburg for most of December hearing and determining a case.
We delivered the judgment on 22 December and no need to tell what the situation was at major European airports.
The long story short is that I got home on Christmas day at 5.30 pm.
The journey-Hamburg to Amsterdam to Toronto to Trinidad was to put it mildly and adventure (delays and a near airplane collision at Lester Pearson).
Then a trip to Vancouver and Hamilton the first for surgery to my right hand and the second to visit our third daughter and family then it was back to Hamburg for the 31 session of the Court.
Is that enough of a reason?
Thank God life continues.
In Trinidad its seems to be one situation after another am happy that I am not a politician or part of the political syndrome.
Every three years the terms of seven judges of the International tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) come to an end I have been nominated as a candidate for the Caribbean and Latin American Region.
There will be two vacancies.
There are two candidates but one still has to get 75% of the States present and voting i.e about 115 votes.
The campaign began last year.
It is an experience.
By the way a term is nine years.
Once more my apologies.
Kind regards,
Anthony(Lucky)

Hi,
As I was thinking back of my days under PG I began to think about my days at the Mount in a rather sombre mood and just whimsically wondering why good times like those have to go by so quickly, thanks for memories and for persons like yourself who keep them alive.
Here are some of thoughts from one of my senior moments:
The shortcut with all those juicy
Whatever became of Tom??
Remember those soft drinks and snacks on a Saturday afternoon, Tom (if he took to you) would always ensure that your boots had a good 'dubbing' put on them so as to keep the leather pliable.
I also recall being there when the swimming pool was being built and being in awe looking down from the tennis courts at the opening of the pool.
And oh those long waits to see if Bro Vincent would allow us to walk back to the Abbey School the long way around, that was always the highlight on a Saturday, and my days as a proud St Francis member ( the best).
I was there also when they constructed the Seminary and the new Refectory (although I never had the pleasure to eat in it) I remember the bread and food fights at the old refectory, we would get there via the steps under the dormitory pass the big boys room and tread carefully along a path on the side of the mountain, pass the woodwork shop where I got mt 'cedar' tops made.
When I was sent to the dorm by the library I remember Prada was the big boy in charge of my dorm, what a great guy... and then there was Mr. Taliban..Fr Eugene, what a guy.
I was one of the first boarders he sent into the showers next to the basket ball courts cold as hell, but he took a pleasure in that fact I am sure,
whatever became of Pancho.. and Swami, Baby Joe sat in front of me in Prep A at the time, then there was RugHead Fr Augustine hmmm/ever the serious guy and last but not least our favourite algebra teacher Mr Yip Choy I believe his name was, he would appear out of nowhere on a Friday afternoon and enter Prep A, in which was the longest blackboard I have ever seen..he would begin to write sums on the board and then proceed to climb the stairs of the 'pulpit' in the far corner of the class from which he would survey all and sundry, needless to say as he entered the class I would whip out my favourite too which was three pencils strapped together and begin to write my line...the way of the transgressor is exceedingly difficulty indeed, indeed, indeed, it happened every Friday that I would be given penance on the Saturday.
I believe in the time I spent on the Mount I must have seen about 6 movies, penance like rain.
Have you any information about Stephen Malin Smith, Wayne Oconnor, David de Boehmbler these were some of the posse at the time which was the bane of Fr. 'Taliban' Eugene.
It was good to be allowed to have graced the hall of the Abbey School and to have the memories, maybe others can be encouraged to reminisce a bit, the young ones do not know half of it Thanx

You are correct, the old refectory was by the bells, at the time the senior boy in charge of our table was 'turtleback' galt...
What is the news on his brother 'swami', and yes 'boxhead was with us at the time..
Good memories you will agree.
Keep up the good work.

Bookie,
I spoke with Alan Lang at a party in Whitby, Ontario, this evening. I asked about you and about other connections I have with MSB Old Boys.
And then I asked about Maurice Albert.
Unless I'm mistaken, he told me that you were married to Maurice's sister.
Now, isn't that interesting!
I'm trying to get the email address of Maurice for the MSB database, and I wonder if you could help me with his email address, please.
Thanks in advance for all your kind help.

Dear Friends,

The photo: A rocket that was built during my last year at the Mount.

The story: The igniter consisted of a small canister flame holder, old JETEX motor, which was pulled with a thread from a safe distance so that it moved underneath of the rocket motor, the fuel was prepared behind the sports house using Potassium Chlorate and sugar mixed in a cup over an open flame fire. During the mixing on two occasions the mixture caught fire and the hot vapours did slight damage to our hands!!!. No one wanted to go to the infirmary as it was Saturday night. Did it fly??, we set the rocket on the hill on the North side of the football field on the edge of the cliff, well it is difficult to say as it started up with a lot of smoke and suddenly Fr. Bernard appeared from no where at the road on the first bent out of the sports field very close to where we were and asked if we were lighting fire. I took the rocket and threw it from the mountain side to the football field where it sputtered. Next I ran up to Fr. Bernard to tell him something which finally satisfied him and continued up the monastery road. We ran down to rescue the rocket, the smoke subsided and all that was left was a melted aluminium cylinder. The conclusion was that there was no enough pressure in the propulsion chamber. If there would have been one!!! Who knows the results.

Dear Ricardo,
So sorry for the long delays in replying, but both time passes quickly and always lots to do.
I know that is no excuse!!!!!!
Gail & I are leaving on July 8 to 26 th., for a short holiday in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
Although it will be their rainy season and hot with high humidity, we are looking forward to it as we have never been there before.
I have always wanted to see Angkor Wat in Siem Reap Cambodia and this will be our chance.
One side benefit is that the tourists are much less, the country is lush & green and the Angkor Wat moats are full.
So lots to see and hopefully take lots of pictures, to bore everyone on return, but also a memory.
Next year we are planning a 21 day trip to Turkey in a small group of no more than 16.
Want to join us??
It will run from Day one in Istanbul on May 27 to June 16, 2009 leaving Istanbul.
We will probably go via London on Qantas and then British to Istanbul and back the same way, so will allow an extra three days for travelling to arrive on May 27.
I try to keep an eye on the news from Venezuela and Chavez, with Columbia and the rebels and Oil & Gas etc etc. I just wish all countries could live in peace and work with each other, it would be so much better.
Although we support the USA, they have a lot to answer for and should immediately resume full relations with Cuba, it is just ridiculous and work very closely with Latin & South America.
Easy to say and hard to accomplish!!!!
But imagine if Venezuela & the US could get along, it would help the whole South & North Americas.
Sorry enough politics, but one good thing for you in SA is that you do not have the ever present threat of fundamentalist Islamists, which we face in this part of the world.
I follow Ladislao's news with interest and please say hello to all our MSB school mates for me.
Will send another recent picture of Gail & myself taken in April 2008.
Any photos from you will also be appreciated.
If in the past you had sent some emails, which I did not respond to, it could have been when I was in hospital and the mail box was full, so bounced, sorry.
All is well now after some gall bladder surgery and eye ops for cataracts etc. in 2006 /07.
Take good care of yourselves,

Hello, Ricardo,
I understand you're trying to contact Tim Mew in Australia.
Here's his email address: tim-mew@bigpond.com
His physical address is: P.O.Box 1045G, Balwyn North Victoria, AUSTRALIA 3104
I have some notes from Tim, which I'll share with you:
He's written: Hello to all my "old" MSB friends,
The years are ticking bye at a fast pace and I thought I should try to get in touch with at least a few of you.
The recent excel list from Nigel Boos has helped me to do this.
A quick back ground on us:
Married in 1963 to Gail, left Guyana in 1974 with three daughters [Michele, Karen, Lisa] for Australia.
First in Sydney and now for many years in Melbourne.
Two more twin daughters were born to us in Melbourne, Alexandra and Alicia.
Karen has two sons, Timmy [19] & James [7].
Alexandra has Thomas [2] and Sophie [three weeks].
So four grand kids for us.
Michele is married to Ralph.
Karen is single now.
Lisa is going to be married in March of 2009.
Alicia has a partner Fletch.
Alexandra is married to Vlad.
The attached picture was from April 2008 in Hanoi, Vietnam. Gail is 63 and I am 67.
So YES the years roll on!!!!
I will not be able to attend the re-union in Trinidad scheduled for this November, distance, cost etc. prevents.
However it would have been great to meet up with any of you.
I am still trying the email address for Ricardo Figuera that I had, but it has not worked for quite awhile.
So if any of you guys particularly in Venezuela have his new address, please forward and let me know.
I have been in touch with Ricardo over some time but not recently.
He also sent some pictures in the past of your meetings in Caracas, so I have an idea of how the years have treated you.
As you can see, we are about on par!!!!
I have often enjoyed Roberto Boddington's photos on the circulars from Ladislao, so thanks to you for shooting these, although I cannot remember you doing so.
Will also try to find and attach a picture of our family for you.
With love and best wishes to you all and your families and I look forward to your replies.
Please try to keep in touch and help me with any other email addresses from 1958 class.
Tim
And here's a photograph of him:
Best regards.
----------------------------------------------------------------.
Hey, if you have any information about your brother, Pablo, to pass on to us, I'd be very grateful. Of particular importance is his email address and location, but a decent photograph of him and of you too, would be appreciated.
God be with you.

Glen,
Danny and his family moved to the States a very long time ago,
He lost a leg in an accident, last time I saw him was back in 1975,
His dad opened a store and he was running it,
I think they left Trinidad that year.

Hi Ladislao,
It was good to get a link to the website and to reconnect to MSB.
Some of the old pictures brought back memories of scouts and sports day.
While I only spent a couple of years (Prep B & A) at Mount I recognized many names and faces.
Interesting to read some of the blog entries ... that the patterns / hurts of the distant past, in some cases, live on in people's present.
I accept that it is difficult to change who we are, but certainly as we mature and learn to close chapters in our life and forgive self and others that we are able to move on.
Best regards,
Peter Alkins
